Should You Do a First Look? Here’s What to Consider

Should you do a First Look before your wedding ceremony? There's no right or wrong answer. Discover the benefits of a First Look, why some couples choose to wait until the aisle, and how each option can shape your wedding timeline and overall experience.

If you’re planning your wedding, chances are you’ve heard the term First Look. Some couples love the idea, while others prefer to wait until the ceremony.

So… which option is better?

The truth is, neither. It simply depends on the experience you want to have.

After filming and photographing destination weddings across Mexico, we’ve seen incredible weddings with and without a First Look. Each creates a different atmosphere, and understanding those differences can make the decision much easier.

What is a First Look?

A First Look is simply a private moment where the couple sees each other before the ceremony. It usually happens in a quiet location with only the photography and videography team present.

Some couples exchange letters or private vows, while others simply enjoy a few minutes together before the day gets busy.

The final gallery shifts between bright, sun-drenched color and intimate black-and-white close-ups under the palm trees.

Wide shots embrace the scale of the Mexican coast, while candid moments—like a dip on the sand—happened completely unprompted.

Why couples choose a First Look

One of the biggest reasons is the timeline.

Having a First Look means many of your couple portraits can happen before the ceremony, giving you more time to enjoy cocktail hour instead of taking photos while your guests are celebrating.

Many couples also say it helps them feel more relaxed. Seeing each other before the ceremony often takes away some of the nerves and lets them enjoy the rest of the day a little more.

Why some couples skip it

For others, the ceremony is the moment they've imagined for years.

They want their first reaction to happen as one of them walks down the aisle, surrounded by family and friends. If that's how you've always pictured your wedding, there's no reason to change it.

A First Look isn't better. It's simply different.

So, should you do one?

Instead of asking what other couples choose, ask yourselves what kind of experience you want.

Do you want a quiet moment together before the ceremony?

Would you rather spend more time with your guests during cocktail hour?

Or have you always dreamed of seeing each other for the first time at the altar?

Your answers will usually make the decision clear.

Whatever you choose, the goal isn't to follow a trend. It's to create a wedding day that feels like you.
